Scalextric Complex chip fitting

  Ref: FITTING-TRICKY

£24.95 This service covers most cars excluded from other services above, to cover some body modification or additional wiring, disguising and soldering work. 3-4 week lead time. Please see health warninng below before ordering! Examples are new or old Slot-It cars using the Slot-It chip, SCX cars with copper strips in place of internal wiring, most Carrera brand cars, Scalextric Batmobiles, Police Cars, Challengers, and Historic F1s like Lotus 49s. Also small cars like Caterhams and classic Minis if there is physically room for the chip.

Still excluded are open-underside cars, bikes, horses, karts, vintage Triang cars and such like. Some Carrera cars (as shown in photo) will need to have their big existing circuit boards for forward/reverse operation completely removed (these will be sent on to you so you can reinstall them in the future if you wish). Please note also Carrera cars have large guide blades which you will need to file down to properly fit in Scalextric track (this is a job best left to the track owner).

Send your car to us securely wrapped having pre-ordered this item.

Price includes the cost of the chip and return standard delivery (overseas/special delivery options available at checkout) and testing of the chip installation including operation of lanechanger before despatch.

Scalextric Complex chip fitting

TERMS OF CHIPPING and HEALTH WARNINGS: These cars could well require chip or bodywork modifications and/or shaving or removal of driver limbs, driver cage parts, grilles, underpan scoops and other largely cosmetic parts but important to purists. Usually not visible when finished but sometimes they are. Please call to discuss before ordering, if you are not sure about the implications of a certain model going "under the knife".

Car performance and also lighting may be affected by chipping particularly if it's a non-Scalextric brand of car. Sometimes the chip itself needs to be trimmed to fit or wires extended, and we may use up a couple of chips trying different permutations, hence the extra cost. So do not request chipping using this service if you are expecting factory standard results, or if you want the car to stay in its original pristine factory condition (you shouldn't really be racing it on digital anyway if this is the case); and please don't send anything that's irreplaceable or valuable to you. Please note that you may find the need to tweak the installation of the chips in some cars once you have had the chance to run them on your layout, especially those where siting of the LED or chip has been difficult - please be prepared to open up a car and re-seat the chip, some wires, or relocate the LED sensor, if you want to try and improve performance, weight distribution etc. Although we test chipped cars here they may handle differently on your configuration of layout.

Please note that some cars may have a lot of wires inside that are routed through specific areas of the interior to try to avoid interference with moving parts. Electrical tape is also used to insulate soldered joints from touching each other or the chip. If you are opening up a car it's important to think of the routing and insulation of wires as you put the car back together.

You may also find that body parts on some pre-digital era cars do not fit together as snugly with the chip installed and some body screws may have had to be deliberately loosened. We do not routinely shorten the wires supplied with digital chips unless it's absolutely essential, as some customers like to have the option to take the chips out and move them into other cars. However if you wish to make some adjustments to wiring length and placement you are welcome to do so if you think you can improve the installation that way, but by custom-cutting wire lengths to exactly fit one model you may preclude future use of that chip in another car.

If the car you send turns out to be impossible to chip, we will return it to analogue mode but note some modifications may have already been carried out. But where possible we will check for publicly available information on previous successful chipping of a model before commencing any work. Conversely if it turns out to be easier to chip than anticipated, and no modifications were required, we will charge you at the regular "old car" fitting rate instead.

Please note that we don't have the time or necessary supplies to tune and improve old non-magnet, button-magnet or brown-magnet cars to perform to today's standards - if this is important to you, you may wish to first contact Scalextric Car Restorations. Generally customers seem to prefer to leave them in their original configuration to enjoy the more tail-out driving they offer, but on digital.

**Also note that SCX brand cars often suffer lighting failures when run on Scalextric track either initially or after some running (see this forum discussion) - there is a fix for this detailed on Slot Forum which involves insterting extra resistors into the lighting circuit. This can be done for you at an extra cost, or you can take the risk and not bother, or do it yourself.

These jobs will be treated very much as background projects so allow up to 4 weeks for your car to be returned, and working to a deadline is difficult with these. For this reason we don't recommend this kind of chipped car as a gift for someone else, and in any case the presentation case mounting facility is often blocked up by the chip fitting, plus there is the aforementioned potential for further fine tuning of the fitting once the car is running.
