SCALEXTRIC IN SPAIN and MEXICO If you are in Spain or Mexico or if you are going on holiday to Spain or Mexico, please note that the slot car racing system you will find sold there as "Scalextric" (with the branding and logo as shown here) is what virtually everyone else knows as the SCX system. Visit the SCX-Tecnitoys web site for that system. Whilst SCX analogue products are compatible with "UK" (Hornby) Scalextric, the SCX Digital System is completely different to Scalextric Sport Digital and although a good stand-alone system, is not compatible with Hornby Scalextric. Also beware of internet sites, Facebook pages and Twitter feeds of Spanish-based companies advertising Scalextric products - they are only supposed to be marketing as "Scalextric" in their own territory, so these are more likely to be what we in the UK know as SCX products.
Superslot = "Hornby Scalextric in Spain and Mexico" In Spain if you want to find the system that the rest of the world knows as Scalextric Sport Digital, you need to look for products branded Superslot - see the Hornby Superslot web site - where you will find products from this site with Spanish packaging and descriptions, and the same product numbers but largely beginning with an S rather than a C - the image here shows a C7036 Hornby Scalextric lanechanger in Spanish packaging, with reference number S7036. And this link takes you to the Superslot track borders page. Look familiar?
This image shows an SCX Digital start straight with fuel/timing tower, grey track and painted pit lane. This is all incompatible with both SCX analogue and Hornby Scalextric. The naming issue is a long standing dispute dating back to pre-EEC days when apparently Spain prevented foreign firms from establishing their brand names there. Yes, it is completely crazy. The history is all neatly summarised in this family tree and it's still the subject of discussion even in the 21st century.
Resumen para los lectores españoles: Scalextric Digital español no es compatible con Hornby Scalextric Digital. En España, Hornby Scalextric Digital se nombra Superslot. Scalextric español es fabricado por Tecnitoys, que es una diversa compañía.
Videos If you are watching Youtube videos marked as "Scalextric", if the video is from a Latin country and the track surface is grey, not black, then you are probably watching the SCX Spanish Scalextric system. To help you tell the difference...
This is proper, Hornby, UK Scalextric, with sandy coloured borders:
This is Spanish SCX Scalextric, with trackside fuel tower:
and this scenic track is again Hornby Scalextric, but just to confuse matters the owner has painted the surface grey. This one demonstrates the Powerbase Pro with pace cars:
And this one is an example of Scalextric Digital rather than SCX, again with the track surface painted grey rather than black, and run as a night race with trackside lighting (see the video comments to see how the lighting was arranged).
