Scalextric "Start" If you ever looked at buying analogue Scalextric sets for the younger racer in the past you may have been a bit underwhelmed by the variety of circuit layout available to you for an outlay of £60 to £80. Basically you were limited to a small oval or a figure of eight.
Scalextric Start is a new product in the Scalextric range from Hornby that addresses that problem, by introducing a new system, cheaper to produce and easier for young fingers to assemble, available in exactly this price band and capable of producing more interesting layouts with just two track pieces, a straight and a single radius of curve. It's essentially the same geometry as Micro Scalextric, but blown up to 1:32 scale.
There are three ready to race sets, with features including easy-to-connect/disconnect track pieces, super tough "fantasy" cars (not based on real ones so no licensing and hence extra cost issues), multiple circuit options, and special hand controllers with skill level settings to ensure that even the most wayward racer can stay on the track. Out of the box, the track does not connect into standard Scalextric Sport track, it has its own connection system.
However there is a Start-to-Sport converter to enable you to connect it in to Sport track later on, so you can still use your Start track and cars even when the kids have graduated to more delicate cars and more complex circuits, so you don't have to worry about it falling into disuse when the kids grow up. Sets come with decal stickers to apply to the otherwise plain cars. Alternatively, why not make your own, using this waterslide transfer paper .
These sets bring greater enjoyment to the younger racer discovering Scalextric for the first time, and help them to develop their throttle-handling skills before moving on to the standard analogue and digital sets. You can drive standard analogue cars on a Start track as well (but they may handle a little differently because the track surface is different from Sport track). Cars with digital chips in will also run on Start track (as analogue cars). Start cars use standard braid fittings and the underpans are already drilled with the hole for the digital LED so can easily be retro-fitted for digital if desired (they are not DPR ). If you are running a commercial digital racing venture these may well be worth considering for their low cost and impact resistant nature.
NSCC weekend 2010 "Start" Rally cars were chosen for use in our analogue race sessions at the NSCC weekend, 60 grown men and women hurled these around a 6 lane track for over 6 hours, often crashing into each other, and frequently flying off the track table, over the barriers and away on to the conference room floor. Other than needing braid replacement they all still ran perfectly well at the end of the event, a testament to their robustness. So if you are running commercial public racing events, Start cars are well worth considering for their durability, you can also easily re-livery them in your own colours, and we can obtain them for you in bulk quantities.

Scalextric Start set C1203 This set is an old Sport track set from the mid-noughties and is a naming anomaly since Hornby subsequently used the name of this set as the name of the whole Start track system. It was one of the last budget Sport track sets made. If you already have this set, or see it for sale second hand, it does not contain Start track , but an oval of ordinary Sport curves, straights, power supply and regular analogue controllers, with two analogue Audi TTs. Sold out here a long long time ago.
Chipping "Start" cars for Digital To run Start cars on Scalextric Digital, they will need fitting with a retro-fit chip, C7005 is the best one to use. In the F1 car the driver detail is moulded into the body and there is no seat, or driver legs to get in the way, so the chip can be placed vertically in the usual position or laid flat to the underpan. The Le Mans car has a channel running down the centre which the C7005 chip sits nicely inside. Cars don't have chip mounting points but the LED hole is pre-drilled.
Crash barriers on Start track Sport barriers will fit to the side of Start straights (C8223 or C8233). For curves, the radius of Start track does not match any of the Sport curves so the kerbs and borders won't fit, however C8212 Borders and Barriers (without the red and white kerbing) will do the job.
Power supply All sets sold here are equipped for UK 230V operation with a standard UK 3 pin plug supplied. For overseas customers you may need to use plug adaptors for your region such as those shown on our Third Party Products page .
