Digital Plug CarsDigital Plug Cars

Cars which display this icon, in the "Scalextric Cars" section, all accept the digital plug module.

Digital Plug cars are easily identified, if you turn them over, there will be a small panel behind the guide blade, secured by a single screw. Most DPR cars are saloons but some single seater F1-type cars are also available with their own version of this removable panel (see below).

Why aren't chips already installed in cars?
This is a very frequently asked question from people who are just discovering digital slot car racing. Other than when buying a new digital set, there are no pre-chipped solo cars available to buy new. But the perception is that surely digital is taking over from analogue, as it has in many other walks of life such as televisions, so why not just build the digital element into the car, as is now being done with TVs and DVD players now the analogue TV signals are being switched off?

The reason is, firstly not everyone races digital. Many, many, clubs still exist where one car per lane analogue is the format of choice. Digitally chipped cars racing against analogue ones on an analogue track (even though they will work) can suffer small braking performance disadvantages at competition level. Also, some people collect slot cars and don't race them at all, they just put them in display cabinets or dioramas. And because of the different types of digital system, supplying cars with a particular brand of digital chip already included can be unhelpful. In all these cases, putting a Scalextric chip in a Scalextric car at the factory is pre-supposing that car will be raced on a Scalextric Digital system. Hence it adds a cost which those who only want analogue cars, or display cars, or a car to race on a Ninco Digital system for example, would not be keen to pay.

Also, if you stick to DPR cars, actually you really only ever need to buy 6 of the DPR chips, if you don't mind swapping the chips about between cars. This is because you can only race a maximum of 6 cars at a time. Buying your 7th, 8th etc. DPR chips are nice to have as a convenience to save faffing about plugging in chips when you want to race a different car, but the DPR concept does mean that you can get away with only 6 if you want to keep costs down.

So it's better to make it easy for you to install a digital chip should you wish to do so, and then only the digital racers pay for the upgrade. The DPR module is the way in which Scalextric cars enable this to be done, or for cars that were released prior to the DPR module being produced, car chassis have been prepared with holders inside for retro-fit chips. For cars released back in the 20th century, these can still be retro-chipped but you have to find your own locations in there for the chip, and make the hole in the underpan for the track sensor.

DPR plug problem
Fitting the DPR single seater chipFitting the DPR single seater chip
You would be hard pressed to fit this one in 60 seconds like the saloon one. It does go, but you will need to make space in the footwell area for the chip components so it might take a minute or two longer. Proceed with caution.

Pull all the wiring out as far as it will come. Most of the black and white wires which run to the motor at the rear of the car, can be stuffed in the area where the driver's thighs would be. Then, the "Ferrite Man" in this type of car is in a plastic straitjacket, if you bend him in half at the waist he will fit above the LED sensor at the front end of the chip - but ensure there are no sections of bare wire that will press against the surface of the chip circuit board when the chip is screwed in.
You can then put the forward lug of the chip module under the clip behind the guide blade, and gently press down on the LED sensor/screw end. Some wires may try to escape from the sides, so be ready to poke them back in. Screw the module in tight so it is flat to the underpan. Once the screw has bitten you are almost home and dry, but careful how and where you hold the car, don't break off any wings or mirrors. The flared underpan section of the blank module is not present on the plug module.
