Below are the Scalextric chips and also some links to useful computer software items. Each chip is a small circuit board about the size of a postage stamp, with an LED sensor attached. The chip packs include some black guide blades and braids to replace any blue guide blades on the car you are chipping (the blue guide blades don't work as well on digital).

If you prefer to fit the chips yourself, the process is quite straightforward and should not be seen as a daunting task. Full instructions and diagrams are included with the chips, for different types of car. See our "chipping cars" guide in the margin for a pictorial walkthrough. If you need soldering equipment, Maplins is as good a place as any to try.

Digital chip (single seater) Ref: C7005
Availability...
This chip is longer and thinner than the saloon car chip, designed to be fitted into an existing non-digital F1-style car (requires soldering as above). Normally runs lengthways down one or other side of the car beneath the engine cover bodywork, between the driver and the rear wheels, with a longer wire running to the sensor which still sits behind the guide blade. May also suit some saloon cars where the motor is nearer the front. Intended for adult installation only.

This is the digital in-car conversion chip for any non-digital saloon car (requires soldering). We have done many of these conversions now and the fitting is relatively easy, and the soldering required is not advanced. Scalextric Track Designer
There is now a free download available of Scalextric Track Designer. You need to be a registered user of the Scalextric web site to get it, and to be able to register it (without registration the number of track pieces you can lay are limited). This largely replaces C8328 which could only handle a limited number of digital track sections.

The software will run on your Windows PC and provides you with a free 3D track design application which contains ALL Scalextric-brand track pieces, including all the digital ones, and even Classic pieces too. You can tell it what track you already have and can highlight any shortfall for you that you will need to buy. It will allow you to create diverging pit lanes, add borders, and also create raised or lowered sections of track.

It's recommended that you go through the video tutorial provided first, as some of it is not quite as intuitive as you might think but once you are familiar with its quirks you should be able to knock up presentable layouts very easily. Please note that if you are experiencing problems registering your copy, try swapping your first and last names around in the registration box. You can find more help in the Scalextric forums.

TrackPower
TrackPower is an alternative to the Scalextric Track Designer program, a 2D planning tool that will allow you to model analogue and digital layouts using other brands of track as well. Available from the developer direct for a small fee paid via Paypal.

SSD Development Community
Scalextric Digital has spawned a community of slot-car petrolheads who are also a dab hand at electronics and computer programming - mostly based around Slot Forum and the NSCC - who have come up with a selection of products to fill gaps in the Scalextric portfolio.

Some of their latest work was demonstrated at the 2008 NSCC/Hornby weekend (see photo) where lap count towers and race/fuel management computer programs were put through their paces. Find out more below.

PC Lapcounter
Scalextric Sport Digital was in great need of a software package like this, but Scalextric have not (yet?) got around to making one.

So PC Lapcounter was developed by Guy Langenakens of Belgium, this is the package we use here at Cheddar on the trackside computer, to display lap times and race positions. But it does much more - you can also use it to provide race commentary, car sound effects, simulate fuel strategies, manage pit stops, run endurance races with timed driver stints and more besides. In fact we have liaised with Guy to test each new version, provide feedback and suggest improvements so you will find many features that are only in here because we asked for them, such as fuel calibration, "driver finished" indicator, a full lap chart facility and complete results database - to name just four. It has recently been upgraded to work with the PB Pro (see power and control page).

History
PC Lapcounter began life as an analogue timing package several years ago (it will still work on analogue, and we use it on our analogue club track as well) but it has supported SSD since 2005 and now also supports SCX Digital. Lap Count / Timing Tower
Rich also produces a trackside tower which shows all 6 race positions and lap times on a clear display screen. Connects to the 6-car powerbase. These are made in batches to keep component cost down, you will need to pre-order a tower from Rich. He is taking orders right now for towers so place your order ASAP. The more orders he receives it brings the cost down. The tower comes in the format shown so you can build it in to your trackside scenery.

Other timing and race management programs
Other software is continually popping up as IT wizards with a penchant for slot car racing get their programming hats on. All work through Rich's cable. One such is Slot-GP, which you can find out more about if you follow this link to Slot Forum. Another package under development is SSDC.
