Chipping analogue cars for Scalextric digital Most cars will happily take a digital chip these days, to enable them to run on both digital and analogue tracks. You can buy the chips and install yourself or increasingly we find people taking advantage of our chipping service below, to save themselves the bother. We're doing several of these every month and in the run up to Christmas, shoeboxes and whisky boxes (sadly without the whisky), but full of old slot cars, start arriving. So it's best to get your orders in early as demand is usually a lot higher then. The image on the left was taken after a major chipping project for a customer, of 12 SCX brand DTM cars posed following shakedown runs on our test track. We are able to chip not only old, pre-digital Scalextric cars but also those of other brands such as SCX, Fly, and Slot-It. And if you ask Hornby Customer Services about getting your old analogue cars chipped, they will often point these enquiries in our direction.

Our chipping services If you are not comfortable with doing the digital chipping yourself - customers often report not having one or more of the required tools, dexterity, time, patience or eyesight, or are just afraid of breaking something - we can chip cars for you. There are five types of service, priced based on how difficult the cars are to chip: QUICK CHIPPING PRICE GUIDE (scroll down the page further to actually order these items) ref. No need to say which chip, the correct one for your car will be used. Please ensure you send cars securely bubblewrapped, and recorded delivery might be preferable. Cars are sent at your own risk and note that if you send cars in original display cases, this can increase the postage cost and there is always the risk the case could get cracked in transit. Simply choose the appropriate option from the selection below and "pre order". When you buy a car from us and request chipping at the same time, you still receive the car in its original display case (we're aware some providers of this service send you the chipped car without its case). Local customers who collect their completed chipped cars in person, can receive a small discount on the prices below. You can deliver them in person too, but we do not offer a "while you wait" service.

Chips fitted To date we have fitted chips to dozens of different types of non-DPR and indeed non-Scalextric chassis both for ourselves and for customers. The list below shows which chipping category they fall into as well:

Scalextric (all FITTING-OLD unless otherwise stated): "Start" cars including Disney/Pixar vehicles; 4WD Focus, Skoda, Peugeot and Subaru; Ford GT and GT40; Ferrari P4; Aston Martin DBR9; Maserati MC12; Mercedes SLR; Mercedes F1 Safety Car and Subaru police car (any flashing roof/headlight/siren sequence still works on these on digital); Batmobile; Corvette; Camaro; Mustang; Dodge Viper; Jaguar D-type and XKR; Ford Cortina; TVR; Seat Leon; Lister Storm; Indy Dallaras; all the A1GP cars; modern F1 Renault, McLaren, Honda, Williams, Ferrari (all types); classic F1s and sets such as the Lauda and Hunt twin pack (FITTING-TRICKY); Brown- or non-magnet F1 Williams, Jordan, Ferrari, Renault, McLaren; also Ferrari F40 football team cars, Renault Megane, BMW Mini Cooper, Classic Mini Cooper (FITTING-TRICKY); various NASCARs; and, Jaguar D-Type, Caterham, Eagle Gurney-Weslake, and Lotus 49 (these last four all FITTING-TRICKY). SCX - all FITTING-TRICKY because of the SCX internal copper strip electrical system: Lotus/Renault and Renault F1; Mitsubishi Lancer, Opel Astra / Vectra, Mercedes C-Klasse, Audi A4 and TT (DTM) cars, Audi Quattro, Ferrari 360 and 550 (note lighting issue** with some SCX saloons). Note regarding Slot-It chips Slot-It SSD chips are not usually available in as large quantities as Hornby's own ones, and we often run out of stock. Please check the SISP12 chip item below to see if we have the SISP12 chips in stock before sending Slot-It cars for chipping.

Customer supplied chips and cars for repair Sometimes customers send cars for chipping and include new chips or DPR plugs they have already bought, having previously intended to do the chipping work themselves. As long as the chip is still in factory condition and working, we can make an allowance of £5 per chip. We also take in cars for repair that have been damaged during racing and which you don't have the time or skills to fix - replacing underpans, wings etc. (subject to parts availability) can all be carried out, ask for details.

SSD and uprated motors SSD chips are not compatible with motors above 20K RPM. Note that for Slot-It cars with 21K motors in, Slot-It had to produce their own SSD chip. We have successfully chipped a Lewis Hamilton Scalextric Club McLaren F1 car with a 20K motor in it, but other racers report blown chips with motors more powerful than this.

Fastest Scalextric Cars Want some help deciding which are the fastest cars? Have a look at the results of the 2008 Scalextric Land Speed Record which shows some of the speeds achieved with Scalextric cars (albeit modified with performance motors and parts).

Second hand Scalextric If you have got some second hand analogue Scalextric cars you would like to get rid of, by all means contact us with details before you take them to the skip. We can recycle them! We do receive packages of old Scalextric cars, complete and parts, in the post, often because of the WEEE regulations. With some careful restoration, many old cars could have a glorious life still ahead of them with the kids (and grown-ups) of today, on the world's digital circuits! By all means send us a list and photos of the cars and track you wish to dispose of.

Digital cars on a budget If you are on a restricted budget, remember that you can put a digital chip in pretty much any old Scalextric car with room inside for the chip, and that has an undertray (i.e. when you turn the car over, can you see the wires, axles and motor, or do you have to unscrew the undertray first). This is a really fun way to go digital racing, and there is a definitely a good feeling about rescuing an old car, restoring it, giving it full digital capabilties and then racing it! You can pick up old Scalextric cars for "recycling" at NSCC slot car fairs and car boot sales for next to nothing. Some new tyres and braids (see our accessories page), a bit of lubrication, and then just buy and install the chip yourself. You can then be racing DIGITAL historic single seater and saloon cars for maybe under £20 each!
